Is Child Trafficking a big issue in Africa?

Globally, one in three identified victims of trafficking is a child, with the percentage of child victims increasing from 28% in 2014 to 35% in 2021. In Africa, particularly in West Africa, children represent more than 75% of detected trafficking victims, often exploited for forced labor and sexual purposes. The region accounts for 14% of global human trafficking, with an estimated 7 million individuals enslaved across the continent. Sex trafficking is notably prevalent, comprising nearly 80% of all trafficking cases worldwide. In Sub-Saharan Africa, children are particularly vulnerable, with 43% of child victims reported per 100,000 population between 2019 and 2020. The demand for child sex slaves is driven by factors such as poverty, armed conflict, and societal instability, making this a critical human rights issue that requires urgent attention.
